Discover the revolutionary advantages of LED plant growth lights
Jul 15, 2021
In the early stages, people thought that LED technology was quite impractical and cost-effective. With the advancement of the latest technology, the production of LED plant growth lights has become cost-effective. In addition, the range of available LED chip types promotes the development of a more efficient plant cultivation industry. When placed side-by-side with traditional HPS (High Pressure Sodium) systems, LEDs excel in terms of energy efficiency, quality of cultivated plants, and environmental friendliness.
Compared with the HPS lamp that is mainly used, LED is a simple but powerful and energy-saving plant growth lamp. The latter is gradually considered bulky but not so sturdy. HPS lamps have a shorter lifespan, which makes them more expensive in the long run. The heat from HPS lamps is sometimes good and effective in a greenhouse environment, but they are practically useless for vertical farms or growth chambers. LED switches are faster, more compact (smaller size), and are considered more environmentally friendly. In addition, LED plant growth lights release less incandescent heat, which will affect the water and nutrient requirements of plants.
In essence, compared with traditional HPS lamps, the revolutionary advantages of LEDs are:
Economical power consumption-LED grow lights use 50% of the energy used by the HPS system. Some experts predict that LED efficiency will be higher in the near future
Longer service life/lamp durability-Compared with HPS lamps, LEDs have a longer service life; for comparison, HPS lamps can be used for 1 year, while LED lamps can even be used for up to 8 years (that is, 50 000 hours of use time)
Convenience of a smaller space-because the LED plant growth light can be set closer to the plants, the planting space does not need to be very high or very wide
Energy efficiency-With LED plant growth lights, the spectrum can be optimized by focusing energy on the wavelength (color) that is most beneficial for each application and plant. In addition, the reduced heat production allows the LED lamps to be closer to the plants, ensuring less light loss elsewhere.
Fire safety-Compared with traditional HPS lamps, LEDs do not become very hot, so they are safer to use
Dimming-Although most HPS lights use full light intensity, LED plant growth lights can be dimmed even with a remote control or through an app, so in addition to consuming less power, they are easier to operate
